This is Hertfordshire's only national nature reserve - and it's a good one for families. There are a couple of free car parks at Broxbourne Woods. The area is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Local Nature Reserve. Head to Redbourn, have lunch at The Cricketers (who usually have a bouncy castle at the weekend in the summer) and then head back. You'll then descend down Lilleyhoo Lane for a while, before then climbing back over the hill again as you loop around and back to the village.
